New Labels, New Prices: What's Changing at Back Yard Coffee (and Why)

Freshly roasted coffee beans being checked on a small-batch Giesen roaster

New labels.

New prices.

Same coffee.

No bullshit. Just great coffee.

From Monday 12 October 2026, Back Yard Coffee will have a new look on the bags and a new price structure across the range.

This is not a straight price increase.

Some 250g bags are going up. The 1kg and 2kg options are coming down where available. If you buy in bulk, this is good news.

Here are the details.

1. The labels are changing

The bags are getting a new look.

That is the simple version.

The coffee inside is unchanged. The same beans. The same farms. The same roast profiles. The same approach to buying, roasting and checking every batch before it leaves Sussex.

The new labels will continue to carry the information that matters:

  • Origin.
  • Process.
  • Roasted on date.
  • Tasting notes.

Every bag carries the date the coffee was roasted. Not a best-before. That’s the date that actually tells you something.

No mystery. No vague “premium blend” wording doing all the work. Just the useful details you need to choose your coffee and brew it properly.

The bags are still fully recyclable.

2. The new prices start on Monday 12 October

Here is the full list.

Coffee 250g 1kg 2kg
Foundation £9.50 £33.00 £61.50
Roaster's Choice (subscription) £9.75 £33.90 -
Brazil Natural £10.20 £35.50 -
Uganda Natural £10.50 £36.50 -
Slow Lane Decaf £9.95 £34.60 -
Kenya Misadhi Lacto £12.50 £43.50 -
Rwanda £10.50 £36.50 -
Back Yard Coffee Selection Box £48.00 - -

The important bit is the shape of the change.

The 250g prices move up. The 1kg and 2kg prices come down.

That means buying more coffee gives you better value per kg than it did before. A 1kg bag is now a more sensible option for regular drinkers, offices, cafés and anyone who already knows what they like.

The Foundation house blend is £9.50 for 250g, £33.00 for 1kg and £61.50 for 2kg.

If you want something selected for you, Roaster’s Choice starts at £9.75 for 250g and is £33.90 for 1kg.

For something fruitier, try Uganda Natural. For something brighter and more unusual, there is Kenya Misadhi Lacto.

And for evenings, Slow Lane Decaf uses the Mountain Water Process. No Swiss Water. No sugarcane EA. Just a properly made decaf coffee with the flavour left intact.

3. Why are the prices changing?

The short answer is that costs have moved.

Green coffee costs have moved. Packaging costs have moved. Shipping costs have moved.

We have absorbed what we can. We have also looked at where the pricing can work better for customers who buy larger quantities.

That is why this is not a blanket increase. We did not want to simply add a few pounds to every bag and call it a day.

The new structure puts more of the pressure on the smaller 250g format, while making 1kg and 2kg bags better value. It rewards the people who buy regularly and gives businesses a more useful price for larger orders.

That feels fairer.

We are a family-run, independent roastery in Sussex. We roast small batches on our 15kg electric Giesen roaster. We are not a warehouse. We are not white labelling someone else’s coffee.

We have also worked with Omwani and AgriEvolve in Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains since 2017. That is nine years of working with the same partners. Long-term relationships help us understand where the coffee comes from and why some origin prices can hold up better than others.

No grand speech required. Just decent buying and clear numbers.

4. The roasting and quality checks stay the same

We roast on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Orders are processed and packed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Order by 8am to catch that day’s post.

Every batch is checked. Everything is QC’d. If there is a roast discrepancy, it does not get sent.

That applies whether you order 250g, 1kg, 2kg or a subscription delivery. The bag size does not change the standard.

We have won a Great Taste Award four times. We are rated 5.0 from 35 Google reviews. Those are useful signs that the basics are being done properly, but the daily work is still the daily work.

Roast it carefully.

Check it properly.

Send it fresh.

5. What this means for subscribers

Existing subscribers have been emailed separately with the details on Thursday 1 October.

That email is the important bit if you already have a subscription. It explained how the new prices apply to your deliveries. We sent it ahead of the change so people had time to process it and ask questions before the new prices took effect.

The subscriber saving remains 10% on weekly, bi-weekly or monthly subscriptions for:

  • Foundation.
  • Brazil Natural.
  • Uganda Natural.
  • Slow Lane Decaf.

Kenya Misadhi Lacto and Roaster’s Choice do not carry that subscriber saving.

Subscriptions can still be paused, skipped or cancelled whenever needed. No awkward phone call. No nonsense.

If you are not currently subscribed but know you want coffee arriving regularly, you can look at the Roaster’s Choice subscription, or choose a regular delivery of one of the coffees listed above.

6. A few practical things

Free UK delivery still applies to orders over £34.

That means the new 1kg prices qualify for free delivery on their own. A 250g bag may need another item added to reach the threshold.

The Back Yard Coffee Selection Box is now £48.00. It is a straightforward way to try several coffees from across the range without choosing every bag yourself.

The labels are changing.

The prices are changing.

The coffee is still ours.

Frequently asked questions

When do your new prices start?

The new prices start on Monday 12 October 2026. From that date, the product pages will show the new 250g, 1kg and 2kg prices listed in the table above. The change applies to one-off orders and subscriptions. Existing subscribers were emailed on Thursday 1 October, ahead of the change, so they had time to process it and ask questions.

Why are some prices going up and some going down?

Green coffee, packaging and shipping costs have all moved. We have absorbed what we can, then adjusted the structure rather than applying one blanket increase. The 250g prices move up, while the 1kg and 2kg prices come down where available. Buying more is now better value.

Will my subscription price change?

Existing subscribers have been emailed separately with the details of how the new prices affect their subscription on Thursday 1 October. We sent that notice early so people had time to process it and ask questions before the new prices took effect. The 10% subscriber saving remains on weekly, bi-weekly and monthly Foundation, Brazil Natural, Uganda Natural and Slow Lane Decaf subscriptions.

Do the new labels mean the coffee has changed?

No. The new labels change the look of the bags, not the coffee inside them. The beans, farms, roast profiles and quality checks remain the same. The labels will continue to show the information that helps you choose properly: origin, process, roast date and tasting notes.

Is the 1kg bag better value now?

Yes. The 1kg prices are lower under the new structure, while the 250g prices move up. If you drink coffee every day, the 1kg format now makes more sense financially. Foundation is £33.00 for 1kg, with other coffees priced according to their origin and sourcing costs.

Can I still buy the old packaging?

The new labels are already going out on orders now because of print runs, and the website switches to them on Monday 12 October. That means orders placed before the 12th may still arrive in the new packaging. There is no separate old-packaging option. The coffee itself remains unchanged.

No bullshit. Just great coffee.
